Student Featured in the “Star of Bethlehem”

There are many talented artists at our school. This week, I am delighted to share another student’s work published in the Star of Bethlehem. Peter Hogan has been working on his skill with calligraphy for a long time, and his subject matter is almost always faith based. This particular piece displays a passage from the Gospel of Luke 23:39-43. I hope others can appreciate this as much as I have. We might see some more work from Peter in the future.

The text reads:

2024 National Honor Society Induction Ceremony

Mr. Ambrose Bean

Today we held our National Honor Society induction ceremony. Each year, this is an opportunity for us to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of a small group of students who are joining the chapter at our school. I always think it is worth noting that academic excellence accounts for only one of the four NHS pillars. We also want to see our students striving to demonstrate strong character, service, and leadership skills. We do not want them to possess mere skill; we want them to use their skills for the benefit of others and the community as a whole.

This perspective...

Lent = Love

During dismissal last Friday, I heard Mr. Tremblay announce that Mrs. Nelson had kindly arranged all of the sleds on the front lawn for students to take home.  The message my winter-weary soul heard was, “We declare winter over!” It gave my heart a lift.

(I still declare winter over, despite the white stuff that appeared over the weekend!)

The entire faculty and staff was given a lift last week during Teacher Appreciation Week. Our families were so generous with us!! Occurring at the perfect time in the year, during the gray end-of-winter days, it boosted morale, provided an...

Student Featured in the “Star of Bethlehem”

We are honored to partner with a project undertaken by one of our teachers, Mr. Ambrose Bean. Through his inspiration, a new website has been established to "direct man’s gaze, to point the awareness and experience of the whole of humanity toward the mystery of Christ.” (Pope St. John Paul II, Redemptor Missio.) Mr. Bean has been recording classroom content and publishing it, along with student submissions, to the Bethlehem Society's online magazine. We will periodically share this content with our community. We hope you enjoy it!

Teacher becomes the student

Even teachers remain students! As part of our institutional commitment to modeling the life of a disciple (from the Latin discipulus, learner), we teachers prioritize enriching our own minds and hearts with a good book! We are students of Jesus Christ.

One teacher recently asked a rather poignant question: How can we ever instill a culture of reading in the lives of young people in today’s secular and superficial society? It is a hard question. In my experience, hard questions usually do not require complex solutions.

“How do we help our children get to heaven?,” we ask ourselves: we...

Why are we here?

Why are we here?

The Baltimore Catechism gives us an answer to this age-old existential conundrum.

“God made us to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in Heaven.” So, that answers that.

As we prepare to celebrate Catholic Schools Week next week, it might be a good idea to refocus that question.  Why are we here? At a Catholic school, in particular?

Historically, Catholic schools are renowned for providing rigorous academic programs in an environment that promotes virtue, respect, and traditional values. Educating the whole child is no...

After 30 years, what comes to mind?

"He made for them discretion with a tongue and eyes and ears, he gave them a mind for thinking, and filled them with the discipline of discernment.
He created them in the knowledge of the spirit; he filled their hearts with understanding, and showed them good and evil." (Sirach 17:6-7)

Here we are: 2024. Thirty years of existence.

The other day I was commenting to my wife a kind of strange realization: for all of my adult life, I have only known Mount Royal Academy. This is the only location I have been getting up to drive to everyday for the last fifteen years. I vividly recall making t...

The Seeker

Happy New Year! The first Sunday of Advent, which we celebrated this past Sunday, marks the beginning of the liturgical year.  Advent is a time of preparation, as we ready our hearts to welcome Christ, born to us as Messiah and Savior.  Advent can also be considered a time for a new beginning, or fresh start.  We ask ourselves what we need to change in our lives to become more faithful followers of Christ.  This type of self-reflection is necessary if  we are to grow in our spiritual life, and Advent is the perfect time to begin anew!

There is a saying, “Begin with the end in mind.”  Knowing ...
